Communication is great, but are there any other long-term benefits to baby sign language?
There are studies that have looked at increasing IQ and language skills. I’ll give you an example; most non-signed- typically developing toddlers have about 10 verbal words at 16 months. Both my little ones and this is typical of babies who are signed, had over 80 words (counting their signs and verbal words).
I’ve been in touch with researchers now who are continuing to look at signing with babies and the increased verbal development. I’ve also been in touch with one researcher looking at attachment and how it may be enhanced when parents sign with their babies.
